Gun Buy Backs. Can Some Please Explain to Me How This Will help?

Here we go again. Another city funded gun buy back program, this time in Boston. Link to Boston's CBS Local article. Can some please explain to me how this will help? For I will never understand this buy back idea.

For one thing, if they buy guns no questions ask, doesn't that seem like something that would promote theft? Talk about an easy fence for a criminal. Especially since the organizers of the event want stolen firearms in the first place. The politicians can boast they got X number of illegal fire arms off the street and the criminals got a paid by them to do what they do best. Win, win for everyone, except of course the taxpayer and the legal firearms owner.

Besides I really don't see a criminal giving up the criminal life because they can get $50 or something for their gun. Would an offer to buy a tool you use for your chosen profession be a career changing event for anyone else?

Here is the real reason for a city funded gun buy back; blaming your city's crime problems on an animate object is easier than addressing a behavior problem of some of the people who got you elected to an office of power. All you have to do is throw some tax payer money out as an award, have a press conference showing off some firearms the reward brought in, and it looks to the uninformed voter like you actually did something.
