Welcome to the Sioux Scout website

Welcome to the Sioux Scout website
The Sioux Scout website is a place to find fun and informative content ranging from the outdoors in general, hiking & camping on one end, and self reliance & preparedness on the other. The goal is to show just how much those two cultures have in common. A Prepper can learn a lot from a Hiker and vise versa.

We are all about having a positive focused mindset, having the right gear and the know how to work the two together for whatever adventure lays ahead.

Range Report: 7.62 X 39 AR Upper First Shots

It works!!

Just got back inside from test firing the 7.62 X 39 AR upper. Currently it's -8°F, so I just waded through the snow to the edge of the yard and fired two magazines worth into the pistol range berm. The 10 round mag cycled through without an issue. The 30 round mag had 4 or 5 hang ups including failing to strip off a round. My hand were already too cold to mess with it, so I didn't fire the last 5 rounds.

All things considered: brand new upper from a little known (to me anyway) company, brand new off brand mags, -8°F weather, and shooting steel case Russian ammo through a platform that wasn't intended to shoot it in the first place, I'm pretty pleased.

Looks like I have something I can work with. Looking forward seeing how it performs after it's breaks in and with higher quality ammo. Not to mention shooting it in weather that's not trying to kill me!

Right now I doubt shooting 7.62 X39 through an AR platform will be reliable enough for me to trust my life to it. But it may be reliable enough to take with hunting once or twice during Deer Season. It will certainly make a good training tool for the range for two reasons. First, 7.62 X 39 is more affordable than 5.56, stretching my shooting budget further. Plus if it is more prone to malfunctions, it will give me more practice on clearing those malfunctions. Better than loading dummy rounds into the mix because I will never know when a malfunction may happen.

I'm just starting to attempt to making firearms related YouTube videos. If you watch these you will quickly realize I have no clue what I'm doing yet. Hopefully I will catch on quickly.

7.62 X 39 AR Upper: Frist Shots!

"7.62 X 39 AR Upper: Frist Shots!" is down right hilarious. You can clearly tell I was no way ready to start recording, but I was underdressed for the weather and there was no turning back once I started. I couldn't see the viewfinder, so I struggled to keep things in frame. Plus standing in knee deep snow in below zero weather made me a little worse than normal.

Once I was done shooting, I ad-libbed and tried a Les Stroud Survivorman style walk and talk back to the house. The cold killed the camera before I stopped rambling. Too bad the camera didn't top working sooner! But that's enough excuses. It was still a fun video to make.
