Welcome to the Sioux Scout website
The Sioux Scout website is a place to find fun and informative content ranging from the outdoors in general, hiking & camping on one end, and self reliance & preparedness on the other. The goal is to show just how much those two cultures have in common. A Prepper can learn a lot from a Hiker and vise versa.

We are all about having a positive focused mindset, having the right gear and the know how to work the two together for whatever adventure lays ahead.

Carrying an Extra Mag

With the popularity of today's double stacked magazine pistols, many people who carry them don't see the need to carry an extra magazine. With compact and sub-compact pistols carrying 10, 12, 15 rounds of ammunition, many don't see the need to add an extra magazine to their EDC.

People, myself included, think "there is no way I will ever need more than one magazine's worth of ammo." We think of the Instructors telling us something along the lines of "most gun fight happen with three yards, in three seconds and three shot are fired" along with a host of other reasons not to carry a spare magazine.

I think many Armed Citizens tell themselves many logical, or at least seemingly logical reasons why not to carry a spare magazine, but really it may come down to two things. One, the don't want the extra hassle of adding one more thing on their person everyday. They start to feel like some sort of Batman wanna-be with a utility belt of EDC gear. The second reason is an underlying fear of "Oh my God, I might actually need one" that they want to ignore.

I have come to the opinion that the possibility of needing a second magazine is something one shouldn't ignore for two different realistic scenarios. And neither of the two scenarios are running your first magazine empty.

First is most firearm malfunctions are feed related. Some of those malfunctions are cleared by removing the magazine. In a bad situation, letting the magazine fall from the gun, clear the malfunction and load a fresh magazine is the fastest way to get back into the fight. It would not be a good time juggling a magazine with a nonfunctioning gun that you are trying to fix, while someone was shooting at you.

Also a real possibility is accidentally hitting the magazine release while drawing or firing the gun. again, an already bad situation would get suddenly worse if you had to look around on the ground for the dropped magazine.

Those are the two reasons I started to carry a spare magazine. Yes it takes a little longer to get dressed in the morning and it's one more thing on my belt. But it doesn't take that much time and there are some great inexpensive options for concealable mag holders that are very comfortable to wear.
