For what I've seen, it's working. It's too early for me to truly believe this movement will stop the band, but people nonetheless are taking notice. Congress is getting involved, the NRA and other 2nd Amendment Groups are getting involved. A lot of noise is being made. Unlike what recently happened when 7N6 was banned under the same illogical reasoning by the ATF.
This has raised a good question by many AK fans in the Gun Culture: "what about us?" Why wasn't such a fuss raised about the ATF's ban on 7N6 ammo? Why is M855 being defended while there was no love for the 7N6?
I think there is two reasons for that.
1) We were caught off guard.
2) Hardly anybody shot 7N6
Let's be honest about it, before it was banned most people never even heard of 7N6. It is a corrosive steel case surplus round for the AK-74. If you say AK-74 in most gun forums or ranges, someone will try to "correct" you by saying it's called a AK-47, not 74. 74 shooters represents a relatively small amount of shooter out there. 7N6 is/was a "niche round" for lack of a better description.
There just simply as many AK shooters as there are AR shooters. Of the AK shooters, there are more 7.62x39 shooters than 5.45x39 shooters. Of the 5.45x39 shooters, many just don't like shooting corrosive ammo. So there really wasn't much attention paid to 7N6.
But mainly I think we, as the Gun Culture, were caught off guard by the ban of 7N6. It seemed to fly in under the radar and it was banned before we could say anything. When the 7N6 was banned, I think many started to pay closer attention and caught the proposed M855 ban in time to raise our concern.
