Alien Gear Cloak Holster: The Perfect Holster for Someone Who Doesn't Know What They Want

The Alien Gear IWB holsters seem to have become a pretty popular choice for a concealed carry holster. The main reason is its very low price. It’s half the cost of many of its completion’s products. Not to mention the neoprene backing requires no break in time. Is it a great holster? No. No it is not a great holster, but it is a very decent one.

I bought one about a year ago pretty much just to see if it lived up to the hype. I’ve already moved from the hybrid style IWB to using the G-Code / HSP INCOG holsters (or that style for the Walter PPS) at that time, so I bought one for two handguns I never really considered carrying IWB; my 1911 and my Glock 20. The thought was that those two larger, heavy handguns would be a good test for it.

While carrying a 1911 is not for me, I was pretty impressed on how well it carried. It tucked into my body comfortably and still easy to draw and re-holster. I had the same results with the big old 20. Even wearing the heavy and bulky full size Glock all day was a comfortable experience.

So for cost, general comfort, and all around quality the Alien Gear Cloak is a good choice. But I stress general comfort. The hard shell for this holster is quite large, since it’s made to be interchangeable to accommodate a very wide selection of handguns. This makes for a large non-flexible area on the holster that will put pressure on you when your bend at certain angles or are sitting.

The other drawback to this holster is also due to the large shell. While the holster is tuckable, the large shell prints like a HP when wearing light weight pants like Dockers or dress slacks.

But for the money you pay, you really get a well designed holster ruggedly built from quality components. Not to mention an outstanding warranty and customer service. Not a great holster, but it is a very decent one.

If you want a great holster, you’ll still need to get one that is built specifically for one gun. That is how you’ll get the slimmest, most comfortable and moldable to your body holster. The diversity and modularly are great features of the Alien Wear holster, but they are also its downside.

If you’re an experienced concealed carrier with one gun (or maybe a few) that you carry daily, this is not the holster you’re looking for. But I have, and will again, recommend this holster to people who don’t know what they want. Such as people new to concealed carry in general, or people who are new to IWB or hybrid style holsters, or are trying out different options for carry guns. The Alien Wear holster makes a great “gateway” option for those folks.

It is also a good option for people who have multiple handguns that they do not carry, but would like a range holster of higher quality than the “Uncle Mike’s” variety. Buying a base holster for just over $40 and a shell for each gun for just under $15 would be a pretty cost effective route to take.
